The Consortium, Inc. is a nonprofit Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) incorporated in 1967. CMHC's are nonprofit organizations that provide mental health services to the community and take responsibility to arrange all medical services needed by its patient population. The Consortium is one of Philadelphia's twelve CMHC's and delivers mental health, mental retardation services to the West and Southwest Philadelphia region, and throughout the City.

Since the Division of Mental Health was established in 1954, the Department of Public Health has provided behavioral health care to the citizens of Philadelphia. Following the 1966 Mental Health and Mental Retardation Act of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Office of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (OMH/MR) was set up in 1968 to administer and coordinate services to the mentally disabled. Today, "OBHS/MRS (Office of Behavioral Health Services") / Mental Retardation Support Services" continues to develop a comprehensive, coordinated and unified system of care with a full integration of services and funds of which The Consortium is proud to be a part.

Today, the Consortium continues to change and grow, adapting to challenges and opportunities. Its core of Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol, Older Adult and Mental retardation services continues to serve thousands of people annually.

The Consortium story is punctuated with innovation, leadership and a caring, concerned spirit. These are the hallmarks of the Consortium, and qualities which will insure its continued growth as a broadly based health and human service institution.
